Taste is a systems problem

Taste is often treated as instinct: something private, mysterious, and difficult to explain. That framing makes it seem fixed. Either you have it or you do not.

In practice, judgment improves when the conditions around it improve.

Build a better loop

You need references good enough to sharpen your eye, constraints strong enough to force decisions, and feedback specific enough to reveal what you missed.

The loop matters more than any single opinion:

  1. Make something concrete.
  2. Compare it with work you respect.
  3. Name the difference precisely.
  4. Change one decision and look again.

Attention is the scarce material

The strongest designers are not noticing everything at once. They have learned which details carry the most weight at each stage of the work.

Taste becomes reliable when attention stops being accidental.
